Gallbladder Removal: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation for cholecystectomy

Cholecystectomy is an elective procedure where healthcare providers explain the condition and recommend it, often involving blood tests and health screenings. They ask for informed consent and inform about open or laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures plans. Before surgery, an IV line is installed in the arm to deliver medicines and administer anesthesia.

During cholecystectomy

Lap cholecystectomy involves making small incisions near the belly button, inflating abdomen with carbon dioxide gas, using a laparoscope, removing gallbladder, and closing incisions with stitches. An open cholecystectomy involves making a 4-6 inch incision under the right rib, removing the gallbladder, inserting a Jackson Pratt drain, and closing the incision with stitches.

After the Surgery

After surgery, one is shifted to the recovery room for monitoring. If patients underwent a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, they might be discharged home the same day. If one had an open cholecystectomy, they would need to spend a few days in the hospital. The drain may remain in place for a few days, and the patient might return home.

Gallstone surgery recovery time

Recovering from laparoscopic cholecystectomy usually takes about two weeks, whereas recovery from open cholecystectomy may take six to eight weeks. If a drain is present, it will be removed during the follow-up appointment. Many individuals can resume work within one to two weeks, but it’s important not to engage in physical activities until approved by the surgeon.

Post-procedure care:

Types of Cholecystectomy

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy:

In this category, the patient is administered general anaesthesia, followed by the insertion of the devices through 3 to 4 incisions made to better access the gallbladder, and the gallbladder is removed using a tiny camera for precision. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery time is typically between 1-2 hours.

Open Cholecystectomy:
In this category, the surgeon accesses the liver and gallbladder by making a 6-inch incision right below the right rib cage. The gallbladder is excised, and the incision is closed with staples. This procedure is performed when laparoscopic cholecystectomy fails or when the gallbladder is severely infected or scarred, gallstones are not visible, the patient is overweight or obese, or there are bleeding issues during surgery.
